Worldways goes African in December

Worldways is the new public programming initiative of International Programs which explores topics that are international in scope and central to our understanding of ourselves as part of the global landscape. On Nov. 13, 2009, the first production brought forth important discussions about human rights and was taped before a full house!

On Friday, December 11, 2009, Joan Kjaer will be coming to you (live!) with all things African from 5-7 p.m. in the Old Capitol Senate Chamber on the University of Iowa Campus. The event is free and those in the community are encouraged to attend.

If you are unable to attend, please tune in online on Dec. 11 from 5-7 p.m. for the live stream of the event!

These productions are also available post-production in several forms. Worldways is now a regularly-scheduled feature of UITV and KRUI 98.7. (Times are not yet announced for the Dec. 11 production.)

In addition to these local outlets, the audio content is also available at the Public Radio Exchange, an online marketplace for public radio programs. A free and easy sign-up is required, granting you access to upload or listen to the audio pieces.

Joan Kjaer, Worldways Host

Worldways host Joan Kjaer, well known to Iowans from her series Know the Score on public radio, blends discussions of culture, history, literature, language, politics and art with live musical performances, all in an effort to illustrate and illuminate the complexities that make us distinct from one another while celebrating our common humanity.

Each monthly Worldways program embraces a different theme, drawing on the rich and seemingly endless scholarly and experiential resources of the faculty, staff and students of International Programs.

We welcome your participation as a member of the live audience!

I am sure that I will love your program, but I wanted to let you know that the text on this web page http://accents.international.uiowa.edu/global-gigs/introducing-worldways/ is much too small to read. Please increase the font size. A good example of a readable page is found at: http://international.uiowa.edu/centers/human-rights/news/conferences/UICHR10.asp

    Dear Joan,

I didn’t get an opportunity to tell you how much I enjoyed your program last Friday evening. The energy in the room was great….and the guests were fascinating.

    Congratulations!

    Daniel

The fusion of music, news and culture on Worldways is a refreshing change from the typical local programming (whether it is radio or television, etc.). This program is truly international as it addresses worldwide themes and brings together the viewpoints of a diverse section of the world’s population. I can’t wait to hear more!
